Today is May 15th which is Bloggers Unite for Human Rights day. The trouble I’ve got since I threw my blog into the ring is that I write a humor blog, and how is one supposed to write about human rights violations in a funny way?
After racking my brain for several hours, I’ve surrendered to the fact that there is just nothing funny about human rights violations. I’m going to leave the Zombie Chickens and Hot Blondes at home and, for today at least, team-up with Amnesty International.
Right now there is a massive humanitarian effort underway to help the victims devastated by Cyclone Narigis in Myanmar. The trouble is the Myanmar government has refused to grant full access to the international community which is ready to deliver aid and life-saving supplies to its citizens. Over one million people have been displaced and time is running out. Unfortunately, the Myanmar government cannot be trusted to deliver these supplies itself because it is discriminatory in its distribution and some of the most desperate victims in the hardest hit areas will go unaided.
You can help convince the Myanmar government to ease Visa restrictions and customs procedures which would allow humanitarian relief workers quicker access to victims by logging on to Amnesty International’s web site and filling out their email form. An email will be sent in your name to Ambassador Linn Myaing demanding that they cooperate with international relief efforts.
The whole thing takes less than five minutes and you can really make a difference in the lives of over one million innocent victims. It won’t cost you a dime:

UPDATE 5/19/2008: I am happy to report that the Myanmar government has agreed to let relief workers into remote areas. Perhaps the Bloggers Unite for Human Rights effort made a difference!
